Kabir says...

Art song for Soprano & Piano (and version for unaccompanied choir)
by Rosemary Duxbury

A setting of a poem by Kabir, translated by Bob Hays

After being introduced to each other in Minneapolis, writer Bob Hays, sent Rosemary Duxbury his poetic translations of the 15th century Indian mystic Kabir. Bob’s version focuses on an inner experience Kabir was describing. It makes the point that the divine is to be found within the seeker’s own body and mind, revealed as light, sound a wave of bliss, a knowing or more expanded consciousness.

Rosemary’s setting of this poem is her latest work.
It is composed for soprano & piano (with versions for mezzo-soprano & piano and also for unaccompanied choir.)
Kabir extemporised poetry in the market place and often included the words Kabir says as his ‘signature’, so Rosemary has chosen this as the title for her song.

The song received its World Premiere on 25th February 2016, at St Sepulchre’s Church, Hoborn, London, given by world class soprano Katerina Mina and pianist Andrea Benecke, in a concert entitled "A Celebration of Music by Female Composers”.

The German Premiere was presented on Friday 26th February 2016 at the Steinway-haus, Munich.

It was presented as part of a concert called “A Celebration of Music by Female Composers” presenting the work of six female composers of the 19th, 20th & 21st centuries, The programme included song cycles by German composers Clara Schumann and Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn , Viennese-born socialite Alma Mahler and Italian contemporary composer Carlotta Ferrari. German pianist and composer Andrea Benecke also performed her own piano pieces during the concert.
