Vox Luminosa (Conductor claudel Callender)

Delighted to announce the World Premiere of my new choral piece “The Pure One” (words by poet Alan Rycroft) by Vox Luminosa (Conductor Claudel Callender) on Sunday April 9 2017. This is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the choir and will take place at Église historique de la Purification B.V.M,  445 Rue Notre-Dame in Repentigny, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The programme will include Vivaldi’s Gloria and music by Ennio Morricone, John Williams and Vangelis. Thrilled to be featured in this lovely program and in such a beautiful location. Repentigny is an off-island suburb of Montreal, Quebec, located north of Montreal on the lower end of the L'Assomption River and on the Saint Lawrence River.

The Pure One (2017) World Premiere Programme Note:

‘this mirth of many sorrows
takes this birthing clay
and moulds it
to another life,
for every dirt
the cleansing,
for every old
a now...’

Writer Alan Rycroft grew up in Brighton, England. He started ongoing ‘conversations with God’ and a poetic spirit was nurtured. Home is Bristol but he teaches English in the Middle and Far East.
Influences are Buddhism, Blake, Shelley, Yeats and Rilke, feeling honoured to continue their
tradition in what he calls Neo Romantic Post Modernism.

Alan and I met in the 1990s when I was collaborating with several English sacred poets setting
their work to music. In 1991 he asked me to set ‘The Pure One’. I immediately knew it was for choir
and sketched a draft in 1992 but the opportunity to offer ‘Vox Luminosa' a piece for their 10th
anniversary, prompted its completion in 2017. Written for 8 parts, phrases are repeated and the
poem layered so there is a gradual ‘unfolding’ and ‘building’, hopefully to achieve a pervading of
sound and light as the piece progresses.

I am delighted to have an association with ‘Vox Luminosa' and especially to be part of their 10th anniversary celebrations. They gave the Canadian premiere of “Angel Whisper” in 2011, also broadcast on radio in Chicago. RD

Rosemary Duxbury’s lovely setting for the choir shone out….. (we) have premiered many new choral works but hardly one has had the impact on the choir or our audiences as ‘Angel Whisper’…
